About Playing for Others

Mission:

To create change by kids, for others, with the community, through a passionate journey.

What is PFO?

Playing for others (PFO) is a nine-month volunteer opportunity for teens who are involved in the arts, be it theatre, music or visual arts. Each year PFO partners with another non-profit in Charlotte that directly impacts children with disabilities. Through a “buddy program”, committee work and intensive arts experience, teens learn the power of passion, the importance of civic responsibility and the acceptance of others.  PFO also takes a portion of what it raises and donates it to our non-profit partner.

Our culminating Arts Festival Week includes a show, concert, visual arts display, silent auction and red carpet event for children. Read on to learn more about this nationally unique non-profit.

Who Can Join

PFO is open to all teens, grades 8 and up, throughout the Charlotte-Metro area who want to learn the importance of giving back, feel empowered by working toward a common goal, be surrounded by like-minded peers and use their passion to benefit the greater good

How Does a Teen Join?

In April, an application will be made available on the website for the following season. Selected candidates will then be invited to attend an interview.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A PARENT OF A PFO TEEN?

Playing for Others is first and foremost about the teens being in charge, but that couldn’t happen without parental support. Some of the specific ways parents support the mission is to:

  • Serve on a variety of adult PFO committees
  • Ensure transportation to various locations for PFO events
  • Follow up with teens about their specific tasks
  • Listen as teens rehearse their corporate sponsor presentation
  • Encourage conversation about the PFO experience
  • Reinforce good communication skills and follow through
  • Discuss the importance and value their teen is playing in civic responsibility

Want to Volunteer as an adult?

We are looking for adults to act as advisors for teen committee’s. These role models play a vital role in guiding the process and demonstrating the importance of civic leadership. No experience is required, but a love for teenagers is a must!  Click here for complete Advisor Expectations and Time Commitment.
