A New PFO Teen: Ashelyn Galloway

My Experience at Playing For Others

My first experience with PFO was the 2009 Songwriting Competition.  I entered on a whim, not really knowing what to expect.  At the time, I had very limited knowledge of PFO and what it was about.  I was beyond thrilled to be chosen as one of the top ten finalists and had the amazing opportunity to perform my song at the Arts Festival Weekend. The competition gave me a small glimpse into PFO, and I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of it.

The first thing that I noticed was how welcoming everyone was. I have been in auditions and competitions in the past, and usually, you feel like an outsider.  You are viewed as competition, and no one wants you to do well.  Everyone at PFO was different.  They made me feel welcome.

The next thing that stood out to me was how close these kids were. They were united by both the arts and a love for children.  You could tell they really enjoyed working with each other.

Finally, I was amazed at the level of commitment they had.  I had seen adults passionate about something they cared about, but I had never seen kids so excited to be helping others.

I knew PFO would be a good fit for me.  I love children. I love the arts.  I love working with others to get more accomplished.  I wanted to be part of something so much bigger than myself.  I read all that I could about PFO and I talked to some of the teens involved.  This was an organization I had to be part of.

I was so excited when I found out that I had been invited into PFO.  So far, this experience has been incredible. I am so happy to be working with all the talented people I have met.  Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly, and I definitely don’t feel like I just met these people.  Miss Jen continues to amaze me.  She has a great way of communicating with everyone and making them feel important.  She’s done such a great job building this program, and with someone like her behind it, I know PFO will only excel. I’m also really looking forward to spending time with my buddy and getting to know her.

I’m truly blessed to be part of something as great as Playing For Others.  This year will be one of incredible growth for me.  I’m ready to learn everything that I can, not only from my peers, but also from my buddy.
